Promotional Poster Summary

Along with the 3 movie posters I analysed in depth I decided to produce a mood board of 8 promotional posters, with each overlapping different sub-genres including: horror, drama, action, romance and sci-fi. This mood board shows that each poster each has its own USP.

For instance the Salt poster contains a close-up of the actress Angelina Jolie because she is the key element of selling the film. So therefore the colour black is used to make the actress, movie title and slogan stand out. The rhetorical questions used for the slogan ‘Who Is Salt?’ is used to draw the audience attention to make them want to see the film. As a definite release date is not announced on the poster and that the director’s information is not available it indicates that the poster was produced during the early stages of production.

In oppose to the long-shot used for the multiple characters used in the Sin City poster, as more big names are featured in the film such as Jessica Alba and Bruce Willis. The black and rain elements used on the poster is to signify that the film is a noir film, but breaks conventions due to the use of the colour red and the comic book feel to it.

The Friday the 13th poster is unique as it uses a long shot of the villain in the fog to create a creepy atmosphere as its sub-genre is horror. It also makes use of the Chiaroscuro effect as certain areas of the main image are lighter than the rest, to make the poster feel more real and threatening.

This Phone Booth poster uses the placement of the phone booth in the image to make the poster unique. This is because everything is place in line with the phone booth. Including the movie name placed along the edge of the phone booth and the action shots being placed on the reflections. This signifies that the most of the actions in the film takes place around the phone booth, hence the movie title.

The Bourne Ultimatum poster has 2 images of the protagonist split vertically down the page. The left image is medium shot of the male character holding a gun to signify the genre and the right image is a close-up looking furious which again signifies the genre. In opposition to the other movie poster I analysed the release date is place in the centre of the page. This is because the Bourne film franchise is huge so attention isn’t required on the name as it has small bold font.

The Jumper film poster is unique as it has a plain white background to make the protagonist stand out. On the male character there is action shots present of different famous landmarks around the world to symbolise that the film is set in more than 1 location. The blue lighting is used to create an eerie effect and so that all the attention is focused on the protagonist.

Unlike the other posters the Wanted poster uses a side shot of the main actress holding a gun, in which the side of her face is shaded to create a mysterious atmosphere. We also get an action shot of the male protagonist firing his weapon, inserted on the bottom left of the page. Although he is the main protagonist more attention is on the female character as the actress Angelina Jolie is key element of selling the film. The background consist of the sky and the horizon of a city, this signifies dominance as they are place above the city.

In conclusion this mood board has enhanced my knowledge of thriller film posters and how they differentiate from each other. Although they each have their differences, special effects and/or big names are used to give each poster a USP. So therefore it is essential that my group uses special effects when producing our movie poster, as real actors weren’t used to help sell our film.
