Initial Designs for Magazine Cover

Before producing our movie magazine cover I decided to produce 4 different layouts on Photoshop as an idea of what our front cover should look like. All of my designs include the same functions but they are inserted on different parts of each layout. However I decided to place my masthead, main image, skyline, and barcode on the same place on each individual layout in order to convey conventions. We decided that design layout 1 was inappropriate for our magazine it was to similar to other magazines in the market, which is an issue because we want our cover to convey conventions as well as having unique selling point. Layout 2 also didn’t appeal to us because as it was not conventional, which is a huge concern as it may prevent are audience from purchasing the magazine. I also didn’t like the pug being placed in the middle of the page as it would take the attention away from the main image. This is vital as the main image sometimes sells the magazine depending on the actor/character used on the cover.

Layout 3 did appeal to us because everything would be inserted perfectly on the page without breaking too many conventions. However we decided to use layout 4 because it has the perfect amount of space for the main image we have decided to use. This is essential as the majority of the main image would be showing as it is a medium close-up; this is a good method of making our final magazine cover appear more professional. It is also has similarities to both the Empire and Total Film magazines I analysed, so therefore it will appeal to our audience which is required.
