Development of Magazine Cover

This is the magazine cover me and Leyla produced using Photoshop. We had done various research on other magazine covers to ensure our cover would look professional and similar to other magazines in the market which is essential. We also wanted to give the magazine a USP, so in order to do this we had decided to use a main image with an eerie blue lighting effect, which I had taken earlier.

On the first stage of producing the front cover for our magazine cover we placed the masthead behind the actress, on top of the page. In order to do this we cut around the actress using the ‘Magnetic Lasso Tool’ on Photoshop and created a new layer using it, so that it would be placed over the masthead. We then blurred the edges of Steph were the layer and masthead met to make it appear more natural. The model being placed in front of the masthead is to make the movie character come to life whilst conveying the characters importance. The masthead is placed on top of the page as it is very conventional, it has red bold font to contrast from the background. However the colour red also signifies ‘red carpet’ which represents movie stars. This is essential as it is a movie genre magazine. It is very similar to the Empire magazine I analysed. My group decided to change the magazine name from the draft version Hollie produced from ‘Film Review Extreme’ to ‘FilmFlex’ as it is easier to remember whilst having a modern feel towards it.

On the second stage of producing the magazine cover we inserted a skyline above the masthead. We placed a black box with bold white writing inside. It is placed above the masthead to convey conventions and is used to boost the credentials of the magazine to influence reader to purchase it. We had then placed a barcode on the bottom right of the page containing the small version of the masthead and the price of the magazine in small black font. We also placed the website, price, and issue number below the Masthead. This is essential as it makes are magazine cover look more professional.

On the third stage of producing the magazine cover we inserted the main heading plus the sub-heading. The main heading is bold white serif font, whilst the sub heading is printed with italic font. The main heading anchors the main image as it is about the film featured on the cover and includes the film name. We also placed a red banner to contrast from the background containing ‘word exclusive’ in black font, The term ‘exclusive’ indicates that the preview is very important and first hand, to influence the reader to purchase the magazine as they are unable to receive the information anywhere else.

On the fourth stage of production we added various different heading and additional information. For the Eclipse heading we decided to use glowing white text similar to font use on the total film cover which featured New Moon, which is another Twilight film. Including this may influence people to buy the magazine as the Twilight saga is currently hyped up, so it would draw fans to our cover. The additional information is written with blue fonts which again contrast the blue background. It also contains title menus of new and upcoming films to give the reader an idea of what else to expect in the magazine. Every other film name is in bold white font to make each one stand out. Each film name featured has a similar target market so it should appeal to our audience.

The fifth stage of production consists of adding the final details including the pug and the free posters inside heading. The colour of the pug anchors the models shirt whilst the colour of the font anchors the blue background. The free posters heading is red bold font which again contrast from the background I also added a shadow effect to make it stand out more. We also added the final poster along with the poster Hollie created as it we all liked it and it more conventional to add 2 posters like the Total Film cover I analysed.

Final Magazine Cover

On the last stage of production we change the font of the film name to the one we decided to use for the poster. This is part of the synergistic campaign we are creating to link each of our final pieces together which is vital. We decided to change it on the poster as it did not look original and unique enough, there was nothing which gave it a USP. The font we now are using we got from dafont.com, the name of the font is ‘impact label’. We all agreed it was much better than the original font used and a lot more eye-catching and appealing to our audience. Overall I am really pleased with how the final magazine cover turned out, it looked very professional and compared well with other magazines in the market. I had asked my target audience what they thought of it and the feedback was very good and the liked the blue lighting effect used on the main image and the way the model is inserted in front of the masthead. It also follows the layout we decided to use really well and everything fits together on the cover perfectly. However if I was to produced this magazine again I would include more secondary images as it is a conventional function used on other magazine covers.
