Camera Angles
In order to create an effective thriller film trailer, my group will be using various camera angles when filming our video. We plan to use many close ups to show emotions of the characters in our film, from happiness to fear. A range of POV shots will be used during the trailer to put the viewer in the position of the character to make them feel sympathetic towards them. This can also signify that during some scenes a character is being watched, to create a creepy effect. To set up the locations some establishing shots will be used to indicate where the remainder of that scene will take place. This will be a good way of showing famous landmarks as we plan to set some of our shots in London. For the majority of the trailer we plan to use medium shots, to clearly show what each character is doing. During conversations we plan to use many over-the-shoulder shot and shot-reverse shots as they are conventionally used during verbal interactions between 2 or more characters. Furthermore, we also plan to use some extreme close-ups to show importance of certain objects, such as a phone. An idea for our trailer we plan to use an ECU during a phone call of a section of the villains face to create a mysterious effect and tension.
Editing
When filming is completed my group we edit the shots together to connect the story of are film together but without revealing too much of our plot. Likewise to other trailers I have analysed, the beginning of our trailer will be very happy, so therefore we plan to use longer shot times with slower transitions. This will be during the party scene. However as the trailer unfolds the editing will get faster with faster transitions to create tension in order to attract the viewer. This will be during the more theatrical parts to make the viewer second guess what they are seeing. We plan do during this during the petrol station scene and during the rest of the trailer. This technique is very conventional for both thriller and horror trailers.
Mis-en-scene
We have chosen costumes for our characters very carefully. We decided that both Mia and Brett will be dressed as average young university students, to signify innocence. Whereas Dean on the other hand will be dressed in dark/black clothes, to signify that they are the villains of the story. The colour black also is a connotation of evil/anger. Our props have also been chosen carefully to relate to the story. We plan to use a mobile phone, various cars, and a photo of Mia and Dean together to emphasise to the audience that they have had history.
Sound Effects
As well as music and dialogue a variety of sound effects will be used in parts of our trailer. During the phone call we plan to use a ringing sound effect before Mia picks up the phone then a dial tone sound effect once the kidnapper has hung up. We also plan to use sound effects of heavy breathing, screams and heart beats. This helps create tension and give a theatrical feel to our trailer, similar sound effects have been used in other trailers I have analysed so therefore it is a conventional technique used in film trailers. Each sound effect can be shaped by the sound editor or sound designer, not just for realism, but for emotional effect.
Music
The start of are video will be set at a party so therefore our trailer will begin with modern dance music. However the song will then transmit to very slow calm music and as the trailer unfolds it will get a lot more theatrical and faster. This will anchor the events in the trailer and to create tension. This has been done in many trailers I have analysed like Disturbia. It is also essential that the editing of our trailer matches the music to enhance the flow of the trailer so it’s more enjoyable for our audience.
Settings
We plan to set our trailer in the city of London as most thriller films are set in big cities like London. This gives us the opportunity to shoot at famous landmarks like Big Ben and Tower Bridge. Having shots of these locations in our trailer, will automatically inform the viewer that the film is set in London and is an important element of selling our film. Filming in London settings will be a good way of showing the dead ends and obstacles the female protagonist has to go through to save her boyfriend.
